Fashion Lingo Test

As with every other educational institution, we’re going to have a test now that you know what to look for and what to call it once you find it.  And remember, this is certainly open to opinion and interpretation, but it will get you to the general place you need to be when shopping for clothes.

Here we have a wedding dress with a princess waistline.  Incidentally, princess waistlines are very common and very popular in wedding dresses.  This example is a little bit confusing, because the stylist has decided to add an artificial waistline to the dress with a fabric sash.  That’s fine, but the cut of the dress is still a princess waistline.  The overall look with the sash presents what I would call a raised waistline since it’s too low to be an empire, but still above the natural waist.

It is quite obviously an off-the-shoulder neckline, but we can go one further and call it a strapless neckline which is a subset of the off-the-shoulders.  If you were to ask for the later, you might get a neckline that is higher up and goes around the lower shoulders.  There’s quite a difference in the two looks.

We can’t tell the length of this dress, so that determination is pure supposition, but I would guess it’s a floor-length from the shape, as many wedding dresses are.

It’s kind of fun, isn’t it?  And, with this new knowledge you can ask for, and get, exactly what you’re looking for when shopping.  It’s a real time-saver.
